Sines is the main town on the coast and home to Portugal's largest deep-water port. The historic centre sits on the hill around the medieval castle, looking over the bay and Vasco da Gama beach, named after the navigator born in Sines. Every July it hosts the Festival Músicas do Mundo. To the south are the beaches of São Torpes and Morgavel, popular for surfing.
