Vila Nova de Milfontes sits at the mouth of the Mira river, with the Fort of São Clemente guarding the bar. There are calm river beaches and open ocean beaches such as Praia do Malhão to the north. It is one of the busiest towns on the coast in summer and a regular stop on the Fishermen's Trail.
