Tróia

Sandy peninsula between the Sado estuary and the sea, with Roman ruins.

Tróia is the northern tip of the Alentejo Coast: a sandy peninsula between the Sado estuary and the Atlantic, linked to Setúbal by ferry. On the estuary side the beaches have calm water; on the ocean side the long unbroken beach that runs south begins. The Roman Ruins of Tróia hold one of the largest fish-salting complexes of the Roman Empire, and boat trips on the Sado let you see the estuary's resident dolphins.
