Azenha do Mar

Where to Eat · Azenha do Mar, Odemira

A fish and seafood restaurant by the small fishing harbour of Azenha do Mar, on the clifftop of the Costa Vicentina between Zambujeira do Mar and Odeceixe. It takes its name from the village and has long been one of the region's best-known places for fresh seafood.

The cooking is Portuguese and regional, built on the fish and shellfish of this coast: seafood rice, fish stew (caldeirada), fish pasta, grilled fish, prawn and bean stew, spider crab and fried prawns, along with goose barnacles, octopus salad, clams and langoustines.

The restaurant does not take bookings — it serves over a hundred meals a day on a first-come, first-served basis, so on busy days it pays to arrive early. There is a bar, easy parking by the door and a cash machine. It is open from 9 am to 10 pm and closed on Wednesdays.

Azenha do Mar is a natural stop on the Fishermen's Trail of the Rota Vicentina, a few kilometres from the beaches of Odeceixe and Zambujeira do Mar.
